SHAMMA
A costume that is common among the Tigre is the Shämma. It is made of a large piece of cotton cloth wrapped around the body to form a sort of dress. Then a smaller piece of the same fabric is used for headgear, either a scarf or a hood. It is worn by both men and women. Many women typically wear dresses that are long, flowing, and colorful. A light shawl covers their head and drapes around their shoulders. Gold sandals are the traditional feminine footwear. Gold jewelry such as earrings, necklaces, rings, arm bands, and bracelets is also worn. These items used to be made of wood and silver but the Tigre women prefer gold. Decorative tattoos are very popular. Many women tattoo their gums using thorns dipped in charcoal dye to make their teeth seem whiter. A traditional hairstyle is called quno.
the shamma
The Tigre women make fine braids of hair stick close to the scalp and spray out from the nape like a giant fan. Girls wear dresses, sometimes with a scarf.
